John and June Van Bastelaar have always been passionate about Saugeen Shores. As a former Mayor of the Town of Port Elgin, John dedicated years of service to the community, striving to make it a better place for everyone. Now, the couple is continuing their legacy by donating to the new Aquatic and Wellness Centre, a project they believe will benefit residents for generations to come.

“For those of us who are seniors, wellness is so important,” John shared. “The therapeutic pool, walking track, and swimming facilities will help us maintain a healthy lifestyle as we age. These features aren’t just about fitness—they’re about staying active, connected, and independent.”

June agreed, adding, “And beyond seniors, it’s a space for everyone. We were thrilled to see that the pool will have eight lanes, which will make it possible to host more high-level swim meets. That’s something that will put Saugeen Shores on the map in a whole new way.”

The Van Bastelaar’s see the new centre as a vital step forward for their community. Not only will it serve current residents, but it will also attract newcomers and families, enhancing the town’s reputation as a first-class destination.

“For years, I worked as Mayor to make our community a place people are proud to call home,” John said. “Supporting the Aquatic and Wellness Centre feels like a continuation of that mission. This centre is more than a building—it’s a symbol of progress and unity.”

John and June hope their donation will inspire others to join in supporting the project. For them, it’s a way to give back to a town that has given them so much.
